Field of Light..........................(4064.jpg)

As if Cornwall's Eden Project wasn't appealing enough, this winter it will feature a dazzling display of illuminated sculpture. Bruce Munro's 'Field of Light' will be scattered, like some surreal luminous alien lifeform, across the grass roof of the visitors' center.

The Eden Project lights up like a winter wonderland every year, but Field of Light promises to add a really special touch. The sculpture's fibre optic stems lie dormant until dark, when they wake up and pulse with gentle light.

The Field is made of 6,000 acrylic tubes and fiber optic cables, each topped with an acrylic ball. Light is cast onto them by an external projector.

Munro's inspiration came from the way in which seemingly dead desert land bursts into bloom after rain. It's an idea which he has carried with him for many years, and displayed in various places, most notably at the Pirelli Garden in London's V&A in 2004.

Field of Light will be on display from November 1 to Spring 2009, and is(unsurprisingly) best viewed at night. RM

Awesome and mesmerizing light art installation. I hope that they are using energy efficient lights.
