'Its mother is a scooter. Its father is a car,' says Peugeot. And this love-child is certainly provoking strong reaction. 'Ghastly'. 'Insane-crazy-fascinating'. One reviewer called it a Smart car that's seen a few minutes in the microwave.

The Peugeot BB1 concept car was unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, and has been turning heads since. And not just because it looks like it drives backwards (yes, the front is on the left).

Why else? Because it's 100% electric, makes the same amount of noise as a bicycle, is 2.5m long, and seats four. Its steering wheel looks like handlebars, more than a nod to its scooter heritage.

It has solar panels, a lithium-ion battery pack, and an engine in its wheels. It's also accessed by plugging in a smartphone.

The BB1 has a range of 120km and a top speed of 56mph. Go Speed Racer, go! RM
