WRITERS GUIDELINES
Been/Seen welcomes quality travel writing from good writers. We are interested in witty, creative pieces that are opinionated and intelligent. We are not interested in standard guidebook-style writing. We offer and introduce. We do not guide.
If you think you can offer this, we invite you to submit a story for publication. But before you do, please, familiarize yourself with our vision by reading the articles we've already published and our ABOUT section.
DEPARTMENTS
News Articles
BACKGROUND: These daily articles usually make reference to articles or blogs that have already been published. Often, this search starts with an intriguing image which catches our attention; we start doing some background research, find links, and then refer to it with our unique take on the subject.

ARTICLE LENGTH: Roughly 250-350 words, lots of links, and always a minimum of 3 to 4 images.

TURNAROUND TIME: 1-2 Days
52/1 - One week at a time
BACKGROUND: This new weekly section offers original content written on unique travel related subjects that have not received much coverage elsewhere. Potential topics, among others, are more substantial in nature than the News Articles, and require actual reporting and interviews. Some potential topics blind travel, celebrity hideaways, interviews with travel visionaries and time travel.

ARTICLE LENGTH: The articles should have a length of approx 1500 words.

TURNAROUND TIME: 1 week
Movie Atlas
BACKGROUND: Our Movie Atlas explores real world film locations that are represented "realistically". We think this is a marvelous way to discover and explore other countries, cultures and communities. Both today, and as time capsules from the past. These are not traditional film reviews; they should focus more on geography than cinema. Articles should concentrate much more on places and people instead of actors and directors. Movies we think fit the concept are posted on the Joblist page. We are also open for suggestions.

ARTICLE LENGTH: Approx 550 words. We expect 3 -4 images to accompany the review. Currently we are using TopazMoment software to obtain screenshots from each particular movie, but other software is acceptable as long as it matches quality and format.

TURNAROUND TIME: 1 Week
PROCEDURE
We have created an online Joblist with potential subjects for writers that is password protected. The topics are accompanied by short description about why we think it is interesting, as well as links to existing background information. For additional information or questions, the poster can be contacted by email.

Each article idea will be marked for News Articles, 52/1 or the Movie Atlas section. The article category determines the length of the article, image requirements and payment.

Once a freelance writer selects a subject, it will be no longer available on the joblist. If a writer fails to deliver on time without prior notification, the topic will return to the joblist.

That said, we are always open for suggestions from writers. If there is a particular subject that interests you, please, suggest it.
IMAGES
Images are the central part of Been/Seen's style, and writers must submit images along with their articles. Images that accompany the article should be striking, and tell as much of the story as possible. Images must also fit the following size specification for publication: 470x200 pixels. The image field can be split into 2 or 3 images, but we prefer to use a single image with the above mentioned size.

Please submit images in .jpeg or .gif format with no files to exceed 500KB. We must have permission to use the images you send us by submitting a copy of ownership or use of license. All photos must be clearly marked with photographers name or whoever owns the copyright to the image.

Articles without the images that possess the characteristics listed above will not be accepted.
STYLE
Been/Seen respects creativity, and grants artistic license to its writers in the composition of their articles. However, we also aim to be as professional, and require that our articles adhere as much as possible to journalistic guidelines. While we do not employ a specific journalistic style, we do ask that our writers edit themselves, and submit articles that are ready for publication, without further 2nd party editing. Furthermore, the laws of spelling, punctuation and grammar should be balanced against creative freedom always.
BYLINE
Writers for articles on 52/1 and the Movie atlas will be credited with a byline. News articles will have initials at the end of the story. In addition we will establish a link on Been/Seen to a contributors page where we will post a short bio as well as a photo.
RIGHTS
For 52/1 and the Movie atlas Been/Seen buys First Worldwide Electronic Rights to the article. Been/Seen retains the right to archive and reprint all articles for 2 years after initial publication. Been/Seen is in the process of establishing content sharing agreements with other travel related sites, so we reserve the right to offer articles for sale to those sites which share this agreement. If submitting an article which is simultaneous offered to other web sites you must inform us.
PAYMENT
Payment is made upon publication. We pay $25 for each News Article and $75 for each 52/1 and Movie Atlas article. Once your article is published we expect an invoice from the writer with the pertinent info. We pay by check or Paypal.
